Monitoring and assessment of rehabilitation for the closure of Kidston gold mine

The CMLR has been closely involved in rehabilitation projects at Kidston for a number of years. Operations ceased in mid-2001 and all infrastructure has now been removed, but assessment of the performance of the developing vegetation communities on both waste rock dumps and the tailing dam has continued. Rehabilitation assessment using LFA has been included as a component of the monitoring program at many sites across the mine and background woodland areas. Information on soil-borne fungi and bacteria, as well as invertebrate assemblages also is being collected and used to provide increasing confidence over time about the future sustainability of the reconstructed ecosystem as final closure and lease relinquishment approaches.
