Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

We have received many questions from students in the past. To save you time, we have published some common questions and their answers for you here.

Q1: What is the difference between a program, a course, a subject etc?
Some of these are "old" and "new" words for the same thing. A program consists of courses (formerly called subjects) that you study. So for example you can enrol in the program of Master of Mineral Resources (Environment) and study the course of Water Management in the Minerals Industry in one semester. Some other university terminology is also explained here.

Q2: What qualifications do I need to enrol in your program?
We have dedicated a separate web page to this question. The answer can be found here.

Q3: Each course is advertised with a unit number, how much work is "one unit"?
Units measure the effort expected from a student including private study time. One unit equates to approximately 5 hours of full-time work per week.

Q4: Everything sounds perfect for me and I am ready to enrol now, what do I do?
We have dedicated a separate web page to this question. The answer can be found here.

Q5: I don't seem to be able to enrol myself into a Special Topic course via mySI-net, why not?
Since a Special Topic Courses requires negotiation of a topic between you and a lecturer, the School will place you onto a "permission list" after those details have been worked out. Only then can you enrol via the web interface.

Q6: What is this Virtual Reality Mine that all your students talk about now?
We have dedicated a separate web page to this question. The answer can be found here.

Q7: Is there a list of all courses that I can select for my degree?
We have dedicated a separate web page to this question. The answer can be found here.

Q8: How do I find out about important dates such as the due date for enrolment fees etc?
All important dates can be found in the UQ Academic Calendar.

Q9: If I graduate with a Graduate Certificate of Mineral Resources (Environment), will this in any way restrict my ability to later enrol in a higher degree such as a Master of Mineral Resources (Environment)?
No, if you complete a lower degree you can enrol in a higher degree at any time later. However, it is advisable to enrol into the desired program right from the beginning or transfer into the higher degree without taking out the lower degree since if you enter a new program from 2007 onwards, new maximum credit rules will apply.
That is from 2007 onwards, the maximum credit that may be granted towards a Graduate Diploma, if a student has graduated from the Graduate Certificate, is 6 units. A student entering the Masters, who has graduated from the Graduate Diploma, will only be permitted 8 units credit for past studies at the lower degree. To avoid penalty, students should therefore transfer to the Graduate Diploma without taking out the Graduate Certificate or transfer to the Master without taking out the Graduate Diploma, or just enrol into the highest degree desired at the start.

Q10: How much does it cost to study one of your programs?
We have dedicated a separate web page to this question. The answer can be found here.

Q11: I can not finish my assignment in time because of family or work commitments. Can I ask for an extension and how do I do that?
Both, your lecturer and you, have to agree to the new deadline. You then have to write a letter to the Director of Studies (EPSA) to ask for approval. Email this letter to admin@epsa.uq.edu.au for processing and send a copy to your lecturer and the Education Manager. Results must be submitted by a) for the 1st semester, on the first day after the second semester mid-semester recess; b) for the 2nd semester, on the first day of the first semester of the next year (General Award Rules for 2007 or Program Information Book 2005, page 526, section 1A.5.5). Don't forget that any assignment needs to be marked before a result can be submitted by your lecturer, so you can only ask for an extension say to the week prior those dates in extreme circumstances. Talk to your lecturer first!

Q12: I am really struggling at the moment and need to take a break from study, what is the procedure for deferring so that I can continue without any problems after?
If you are deferring just for one semester you don't have to do anything. You would continue to have access to  mySI-net and could add your courses for the next semester as usual. If you defer for a whole year, this is also in order but you should email the Faculty Office at admin@epsa.uq.edu.au and the Education Manager to let them know. If it is longer than that you should observe the maximum time for completion of your program. If you find yourself running short of time, you should request an extension through the EPSA Faculty Office admin@epsa.uq.edu.au and also let the Education Manager know.

Q13: I would like to have a second "supervisor" on my special project assignment to receive additional advice, is this possible?
Your lecturer is the only person who can supervise and mark your special project. However, you can both get advice from many other experts in the world if you wish.

Q14: I have heard that the degree has changed from Mined Land Rehabilitation to Environment while I was enrolled in your program, how does that effect my title when I am finished?
In 2004 the plan of study changed name. If you were enrolled in a program while this change occurred, you will have a choice of title when you graduate (please tell us which one you would prefer). If you are for example presently enrolled in our Master program, you can choose either of the following two titles: Master Mineral Resources (Mined Land Rehabilitation) or Master Mineral Resources (Environment). For all enrolments after 2004 the degree will be ...(Environment).

Q15: I would like to study a course at a different university and make it count towards my degree with you. How do I do that?
We would have to check if this course fits the requirements of our program. Get the process rolling by applying via this Credit or Exemption from Previous Studies Form. Please note that you must get one-third of the units required for an award by studies undertaken at UQ and in courses not credited towards another completed award (Program Information Book 2005, page 524, section 1.6.1).

Q16: I am studying a program at a different university (not UQ) at the moment and would like to enrol in your course(s) to make it count towards my degree. How do I do that?
Please use this Cross-Institutional Application Form to get approval from UQ to enrol in our course(s) before you enrol via mySI-net.

Q17: Can I get you to display my contact details on your web server to enable information exchange with other students?
Yes, here is a good example from one of our students. Please email Alex Pudmenzky with your information and maybe a picture and you will be immortalised on our website soon.

Q18: Is there a telephone/email directory for UQ?
Yes, here (also accessible from the "CONTACTS" link at the top of most UQ web pages).

Q19: I would like to bind my project thesis to UQ standards, where can I find these standards?
The type of binding depends on the type of submission. Are you submitting to the Theses Office (Research) or to your School (Coursework)? And what type of thesis is it: Temporary Thesis for the Examiners or Permanent Thesis for final submission?
Temporary Thesis: Soft cover, UQ crest on the front cover on colour board, fastback binding (black cloth spine strip), gold lettering on the spine with the number of thesis, your initials and family name and the year of your thesis. This is as per the Theses Office requirements.
Permanent Thesis: Hard cover, book bind, your choice of colour in buckram (synthetic, leather look), with the full title of your thesis and your name on the cover, and a shortened title (50 characters or less) on the spine with your name. This is as per the Theses Office requirements.
If it also helps, go to the UQ Website and in the Search option type in Thesis Binding that will bring up all of the links to UQ Thesis requirements (this answer was submitted by Karen Mourilyan, University of Queensland Printery).

Q20: Remote study / Distance learning - What does this all mean, do I have to attend lectures or not?
No. Everything you need is made available to you through the Internet, if your course requires additional material such as a CD, it will be posted to you at the beginning of the semester. You determine when and how you learn from the material we provide you with: Lecture Notes, supporting CDs etc.

Q21: Can I use a project I am doing at work as a project for a special topic course?
Most definitely. We encourage you to integrate your work and your studies. In this way you will not only get a degree, but also complete your work projects with the supervision of an academic. For any confidentiality concerns please see the answer to Q22.

Q22: I would like to use my work data for an assignment but my employer wants to ensure this data stays confidential, can I get a confidentiality statement from CMLR?
Yes, we understand that this is a sensitive area. Here are two example statements from our lecturers Thomas Baumgartl and Graeme McIlveen, please contact your lecturers for endorsement.
