Mining contamination problem? - Application of stable isotope techniques to the investigation of acid mine drainage at abandoned mine sites

The CMLR, in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences, are exploring innovative and cost-effective methods in the study of acid mine drainage (AMD) and relevant remediation of mine sites.

  • This study is an attempt to elucidate the geochemical and hydrological processes responsible for the formation of AMD due to the oxidation of the ore deposit, waste rock and mine tailings at the Mt Morgan mine, east Queensland.
  • The research is directed to the use of stable isotopes of C, O, H and S to identify the source, and to investigate the evolution and pathways of AMD at Mt Morgan.
